Access to Education is a Human Right–

–Let’s fix the school bus system!

NYC spends billions on private contractors for 90% of school busing. Yet we have shortages of drivers, attendants, paraprofessionals and nurses – discouraged by downgraded wages and benefits. Due to this, our students with disabilities, students in foster or temporary housing, and others are missing precious class time!  We are sick of the Dept of Ed’s weak communication; the hot, late and no-show buses; long rides; and outdated vehicles that pollute the air.

Based on our years working with families, school bus union members, educators, and civil rights advocates, we believe a decision-making body led by the most affected stakeholders can do better at:  attracting workers;  improving routes, training & communication;  honoring the riders’ physical and neurological needs;  and keeping everyone safe on and around the bus.

We will petition for a ‘School Bus Bill of Rights’ to empower a panel of parents/caregivers, disability advocates, educators, and bus workers over pupil transportation policy decisions. We also support good union contracts in 2022-23 for UFT (including bus paraprofessionals, bus nurses) and ATU 1181-1061 (drivers, attendants, mechanics).    YOU CAN HELP!
