Wednesday, January 28 at 6:00 = NYCPS Panel for Education Policy meeting

  • This month it’s at Michael J. Petrides School (715 Ocean Terrace, Staten Island, New York 10301). You must attend in person to make a live public comment. Livestream info and registration to speak will be at https://learndoe.org/pep/jan28

  • Visit https://www.pistnyc.org/resources/pep-comment-steps for how to make a written public comment before the meeting (or up to 24 hours after it ends, so Thursday night Jan 29 at the latest).

  • First PEP with the new Chancellor Kamar Samuels.

  • voting on Contract agenda items 33 and 34 = emergency school bus vendor contract extensions for January and February of 2026, because the 3-year ones have not yet been reviewed and registered with the new NYC Comptroller.

  • Written comment is encouraged! Contracts are not adequate solutions to our ongoing school bus crisis. The previous City Comptroller’s audit of OPT at https://comptroller.nyc.gov/reports/routing-our-childrens-futures/ proposes OVERHAULING THE SYSTEM to better serve its actual purpose instead of being a money pit. Future contracts AND POLICIES must include the voices of riders, parents and workers.

  • Also voting on Item 26 = IT support for OPT to get the different systems to communicate better. How will the knowledge and lived experience of parents and school-based Transportation coordinator be applied? i.e. so that summer routes don’t send students to the wrong site or schedule pickups at the wrong dismissal time…

  • Item 2 = Related & support services from agencies, which may include Transportation Paras

  • Item 3= translation & interpretation; will this be applied at OPT call center?

  • Item 16 = consulting for Medicaid reimbursement; does this include for special ed busing?

  • Item 18 = surveys for parents, students & teachers; will they survey about impact of the driver shortage on trips and daily bus route durations?

  • To read more, go to https://www.schools.nyc.gov/get-involved/families/panel-for-education-policy/panel-meetings , select January 28, 2026, then select Contracts Agenda. There is a table of contents with live links to each short description.

English language flyer created by District 75 parents to promote public participation in the local school board (PEP) especially when it addresses busing and related contracts.

Friday January 30 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Public School 721Q in Elmhurst. Intro to subsitute paraprofessional jobs for CUNY students in District 75 programs based in Queens schools. QR code above leads to registration. We do not have a live link at this time. Questions: d75council@schools.nyc.gov‍ ‍

January School calendar

https://www.schools.nyc.gov/calendar lists the days when statewide (high) schools are on Regents exam schedules. Check with the school, bus crew and bus company to ensure that your student has busing when needed on those dates.

Of course everything is closed 1/19/26 for Dr. King’s birthday.  We in PIST rededicate ourselves to Civil Rights, Jobs, Peace, and Transit Equity this year. Enjoy, stay safe.

Disfruta, ten cuidado.

Please be aware of these dates in February:

A) Bus crew switches are possible the 2nd & 4th Monday based on the workers’ mid-year ‘seniority pick’ but only at certain companies, as follows.

Companies where some Drivers switch on Feb 9; Monitors stay for a week, then switch on Feb 23 after break: All American, Bobby’s, Boro, SNT, Grandpa’s, Hoyt, IC Bus, Logan, Lorissa, NYCSBUS (Umbrella Services); Pioneer

Monitors only - switch Feb 26th: ANJ

Monitors only - switch Feb 9th: B-Alert

To find out whether your student’s route is changing personnel: wait, then ASK! The current driver or monitor may stay, or might not know for sure whether they are staying until the end of January or first week of February. It’s not up to the owner; this is a union perk meant to help people (those who have worked on yellow buses longest) to organize their life.

For more background and resources to help prepare your student, visit https://www.pistnyc.org/resources/upcoming-changes

************GOOD LUCK / BUENA SUERTE***************

B) February 4 every year is national Transit Equity Day in honor of the date when Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks was born. To find out about events in person and online for this commemoration, see https://actionnetwork.org/event_campaigns/transit-equity-day-2026

******************************

C) This year, one way we are advocating for transit equity is to bring the issue of fair, safe yellow bus service and expanded OMNY into the conversation in Albany, with awesome advocates in support of relevant legislation.

CHILDCARE and other levels of EDUCATION often depend on TRANSPORTATION! This is especially true for youngsters with Disabilities and/or living in temporary, transitional or Foster housing.

We support the bills S. 1018 (Jackson) and A. 8440 (Tapia) to retain experienced safety professionals on school bus routes for all ages! See https://actionnetwork.org/letters/help-improve-bus-service-for-nyc-students/

So far we are aware of CIDNY lobby day Tuesday Feb 3, and the Alliance for Quality Education lobby day Wednesday Feb 4. Visit

Later in the year, there is United Federation of Teachers lobby day Monday March 16. If you work with another organization that goes to Albany, please let us know.

If interested, contact pistnyc@gmail.com or the organizations mentioned.
