2) Prepare NOW for Summer Services Preparense AHORA para servicios del verano
Accept Summer Rising offers by Tuesday May 5th!! Wait list info is around minute 9 of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsRt3beR6D4
For all other Summer services covered by your child’s IEP, accept immediately, to maximize the chances of having the summer school bus route start the same day when the program starts.
Encourage the school to ask questions, meet deadlines, and keep good records of how they enter ridership for OPT. Remember, summer staff does not always contain the exact same staff who handle these matters until June.
Information on student transportation during July & August is in the last ten minutes of this video:

3) Student Transportation News Noticias sobre el transporte escolar
We are grieving another fatality of a child, nine-year-old Yoel Jacobowitz, accidentally hit by a private Yeshiva school bus. More traffic support has been sent to the area, according to https://www.facebook.com/reel/968208799033121 A statement from Transportation Alternatives and Brooklyn Safe Streets mentions that, “most of the city’s non-emergency vehicles either has a speed limiter, or will receive one soon – but many city school buses are private contractors, and do not have speed limiters on board.” [Many = 90%] Others raise that speed limiter technology is AI and not foolproof. If it’s controversial, the debate should include the affected schools, communities, and workers.
Read about the hardships of Foster students needing a bus route, and the call for $3M new transportation funding in the NYC education budget to address this. Sadly, the driver shortage is leading people to consider the use of vehicles that are less structurally safe, less social, and may still require extra money and time to be contributed by caregivers. https://www.chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/04/30/foster-care-students-bus-service-still-lacking-advocates-say/
Advocates for Children is also calling for $2 million to expand Travel Training within and beyond District 75 teenagers. This and other proposals each have their own link at https://advocatesforchildren.org/policy-resource/budget-priorities-2027
Coalition for Equitable Education Funding petition for continuing existing essential programs, which otherwise will be dropped from the NYC budget after June, is at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/city-budget-fy-2027/
Youth podcasters at https://www.bellvoices.org/ps-weekly are preparing an episode about the NYC school bus crisis. They have already interviewed students and some parent advocates, including PIST. We look forward to sharing that when it’s ready!
The Supreme Court is expected to rule for or against a July 1 termination of Temporary Protected Status for workers born in certain countries. Many of these workers are in jobs that matter to Disability rights, including in home healthcare and the school bus industry. The U.S. Congress had passed a ‘bipartisan discharge petition’ to extend TPS for another 3 years, but it seems to be stalled in the Senate https://americasvoice.org/blog/haitian-immigrant-communities-win-historic-discharge-petition-vote/
Tell your friends and family over 21 – https://dmv.ny.gov/become-a-school-bus-driver
The bad news: there are new laws that prevent New Yorkers with certain immigration statuses from obtaining or renewing a CDL license – and new requirements to the license exam about vehicle features that previously only bus mechanics had to meet: https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/cdl10sec11-13.pdf
The good news: certain youth and community organizations are offering free preparation classes, and sometimes include bus jobs into their Job Fairs [example https://www.instagram.com/p/DXpC9CrjhAL/]. Contact pistnyc@gmail.com to discuss.
